Follow in the footsteps of Boswell and Johnson on their famous l8th century trip to the west coast of Scotland and stay at Taychreggan hotel, a romantic old drover's inn sitting on pretty Loch Awe.

"Hark, when the night is falling, Hear! Hear the pipes are calling, Loudly and proudly calling down thro' the glen. There where the hills are sleeping, Now feel the blood a-leaping, High as the spirits of the old Highland men".

(Lyrics to "Scotland the Brave" by Clifford Hanley)

Scotland is an ancient land of wild, vast moors, cloud covered mountains and deep glens that dip into chilly waters with romantic names like the Sea of the Hebrides or Loch Lomond. A land of long summer nights and northern lights.

It is a land of vibrant music, poetry and literature, and of warm, welcoming people with a dramatic heritage, all played out against an historic background of colorful clans, swirling pipes, and bloody wars. It is a land steeped in legends and myths, their origins buried in the mists of time. So much of what the English-speaking world is today is rooted in the soil of Bonny Scotland.

The peace and tranquility of this part of the Highlands belie the wars and bloodshed of the past 2,000 years. It is across these steep hills and through these deep glens that famed Scottish clans fought some of history's most turbulent battles. Our journey begins in the heart of ancient Scotland, in Campbell country, McDougall, MacLean and MacDonald country, the historic homeland of some of Scotland's most famous and powerful clans and therefore home to some of Scotland's most gruesome battles, bravest heroes and intoxicating legends.

The grandeur of the Scottish Highlands is nowhere more dramatic than at Taychreggan, a Highland hotel located on a spit of land that juts into the waters of Loch Awe. The original courtyard and stone house, dating back over 300 years, have been superbly preserved as the heart and soul of the hotel. Looking across the loch from Taychreggan just before dusk is an almost spiritual experience. If you listen you may hear the call of the bagpipes. If you stop and are still you can feel the Past all around you. There are many lovely, highland hotels, but none are as awe-inspiring as Taychreggan. None provide the true essence of Scotland in all its resplendence the way that the setting at Taychreggan does.

Taychreggan is still a white-wash Highland hotel, just as it has been for generations. Roaring fires, cozy rooms, tartan furnishings and some of the finest food in Scotland greet guests after a long day's journey. Relax in the comfortable bar or stroll down to the water's edge with a book and cup of tea. Be sure to explore the old part of the hotel with its 17th century walls and archways. The staff here is exceptionally friendly and willing to advise on local sights and activities so take advantage of their knowledge. Most of all, relax and enjoy the epitome of a Highland experience.

Taychreggan is the ideal location for those who love walking, hiking and relaxing in total peace. It will be our base for the next four days.
