Cartagena
Located on the Caribbean sea, Columbia's jewel of a colonial city was founded in the 16th century by conquistodores. To protect its gold treasure from pirates, they built the most extensive wall fortifications - 50 feet deep in places - in South America. The inspiration for Gabriel García Márquez's novels of magic realism, Cartagena is a world heritage site and a popular tourist getaway for both Europeans and Columbians.
